NYC, Police, Fire, Municipal Workers Protest

On the heels of arguably America’s largest vaccine mandate protest on Monday, seeing New York City’s essential workers march across the Brooklyn Bridge, the story is coming to a head rapidly. 

Renewed protests hit NYC again Thursday as police, fire, and municipal city workers gathered by the thousands outside Mayor de Blasio’s Gracie Mansion. The city’s vaccine mandate, which takes effect this Friday at 5 p.m., covers 160,000 municipal employees, including cops and firefighters. According to the order, which went into effect only nine days earlier for all City workers, a first shot of the COVID vaccine by 5 p.m. Friday is mandated if they want to come to work the morning of November 1. Any city workers who do not comply with the mandate will be placed on unpaid leave.

Many are concerned that the city’s safety will be threatened by de Blasio’s ‘suspension without pay’ edict for those refusing to take the shot. 

The situation is fluid and playing out by the minute. Bloomberg is reporting the NYPD Has 10,000, or about one-third of uniformed officers, are unvaccinated as the mandate deadline approaches. NY Daily News is reporting The NYC Correction Department is faring the worst, with only 52% of its members vaccinated, while only 68% of the FDNY has received at least one dose of the vaccine.

On Wednesday, October 20, De Blasio extended vaccine mandates to all public employees, eliminating test out options.

Speaking at the protest, 16-year veteran NYC firefighter and president of the United Women’s Firefighters, Jackie Michelle-Martinez stated, “Nine days is not enough time for people who have mortgages, who have family, who have sick children, to make a life-changing decision.”

New York Uniformed Firefighters Association president Andrew Ansbro said, “On November 1st there’s gonna be a crisis in this city if thirty to forty percent of firefighters are sent home, we will have to close houses.”

Dan Bongino's Goes On Strike Over Cumulus Media's Vaccine Mandate

Dan Bongino is taking a break from his radio show and is off the air for at least the rest of this week in the midst of a public feud over the Vaccine mandate imposed by Cumulus Media, the radio giant that distributes his show. 

Several affiliates that play The Dan Bongino Show told the radio broadcasting industry trade magazine Radio Ink that Bongino’s program has been put on “best of” mode for the rest of this week.

The show, which occupies the noon to 3 p.m. time slot on Cumulus Media’s influential radio network Westwood One, also did not air on Tuesday, according to Radio Ink.

Zachary Petrizzo, an investigative reporter with Salon, tweeted Wednesday morning that he received information Bongino is currently on “vacation” from his radio hosting duties with Cumulus. 

Bongino’s departure from the air follows a public clash over the Covid-19 vaccine mandate imposed by Cumulus Media CEO Mary Berner in September. Several of the company’s radio hosts have already quit or been fired over the rule, which was geared toward an October 11 return to the office. Bongino himself has been fully vaccinated on the advice of his doctors as he is battling Hodgkin’s lymphoma, his team said. However he believes vaccine mandates are “unethical” and “immoral.” He threatened to quit his job earlier this month if Cumulus Media didn’t shift on the mandate. 

“Cumulus is going to have to make a decision with me—if they want to continue this partnership or they don’t,” Bongino told listeners in a recent program. “It’s really unfortunate that people with a lower profile than me, who don’t have 300-plus stations, have been summarily either shown the door or been put in really untenable circumstances because they simply want to make a medical decision by themselves.”

Monday CA School Walkout Against COVID-19 Vaccine Mandates

Parents who oppose Gov. Gavin Newsom's vaccine and mask mandates for schoolchildren are organizing a statewide school walkout for Monday.

School districts and families across California are making plans to deal with the peaceful protest.

The protest is the latest move by parents and voters dissatisfied with both on-campus mask-wearing and vaccine mandates in California schools.

Here are five things you need to know about the upcoming California school walkouts.

1. The statewide walkout (also called a "sit out" on social media flyers) encourages California parents to keep their children home Monday. The flyer asked parents not to call their child in sick or otherwise excuse the absence to keep schools from reaping average daily attendance funds from the state.

2. The walkout affects elementary, middle and high schools. The walkout also calls upon California teachers and other district employees to stay home from work Monday. "Parents and concerned citizens all over CA are taking action against the forced COVID-19 vaccine mandate for our children in state schools. We demand parental choice over the bodily autonomy of our children," one Twitter flyer said.

3. The protest is a response to Newsom's state mandate Friday in which he made California the first state in the nation to require all children attending in-person instruction at every school to get vaccinated against COVID-19. California residents could see the enforcement of this mandate as early as January. Since the Food and Drug Administration has not authorized COVID-19 vaccines for children under 12, it will affect students in grades seven through 12 to start. Any student who refuses to take the vaccine will be forced to complete an independent study program at home, officials said.

4. California will also require teachers to be vaccinated or tested weekly, effective Friday. Some educators against the mandate will participate in Monday's walkout, forcing some campuses —including Oak Run Elementary in Shasta County — to close, CalMatters reported Friday. Los Angeles Unified School District, one of the state's largest, vowed to prohibit teachers from returning to classrooms on Monday if they do not receive at least one vaccine dose by Friday.

5. Across California, 50,896,327 vaccine doses have been administered, and 71.7 percent of Californians are fully vaccinated, CalMatters reported. As of Wednesday, California had 4,565,279 confirmed cases of COVID-19 (up 0.1 percent from Tuesday), and 70,010 COVID-19 related deaths (up 0.2 percent from Tuesday), the report said.

Chicago Police Union’s Boss Tells Officers to Defy Vaccine City Deadline

John Catanzara, the head of Chicago’s police union, advised police officers NOT to comply with the city’s COVID-19 mandatory vaccine and reporting requirements. Catanzara told fellow officers to openly defy Mayor Lori Lightfoot’s vaccine deadline.

The head of Chicago’s police union has advised officers not to comply with the city’s COVID-19 vaccine reporting requirement and says members should be willing to be sent home without pay rather than submit to the shot mandate for city workers.

With city employees’ vaccine status deadline Friday, Fraternal Order of Police Local 7 President John Catanzara also said in a video posted Tuesday that the union has filed a labor grievance against the city and plans to pursue legal action to fight the mandate.

Mayor Lori Lightfoot, asked about his comments at an unrelated news conference Wednesday, said: “He’s threatening litigation. I say, bring it.”

For Chicago Public Schools, employees who are not fully vaccinated against COVID-19 by Friday’s deadline will still be able to work Monday, but they will have to undergo weekly testing at their schools, the district’s CEO said Wednesday.

John Catanzara announced he will go into a no pay status tonight following the deadline.

Federal Judge Blocks Forced Vaccination for Medical Personnel in NY

A federal judge has blocked the state of New York from forcing medical workers to be vaccinated after a group of healthcare workers sued the state, including the governor, the health department, and others, claiming their constitutional rights were violated.

Judge David Hurd in Utica issued the order on Tuesday. Several litigants, including doctors and nurses, claimed their First Amendment rights were violated by a vaccine mandate, which does not allow for religious exemptions.

For the last seven weeks, New York radio talk show host Shannon Joy has been rallying the medical community in Rochester and huge groups of health professionals have been marching outside the University of Rochester Medical Center every week, speaking out against what they say is medical tyranny in the form of vaccine mandates.

According to the lawsuit, “The plaintiffs herein are medical professionals whose sincere religious beliefs compel them to refuse vaccination with the available COVID-19 vaccines, all of which employ aborted fetus cell lines in their testing, development, or production.”

Japan on Thursday suspended the use of 1.63 million doses here shipped to 863 vaccination centers nationwide, more than a week after the domestic distributor, Takeda Pharmaceutical, received reports of contaminants in some vials.

The contaminant found in a batch delivered to Japan is believed to be a metallic particle, Japanese public broadcaster NHK reported, citing health ministry sources.

The European Union drugs regulator said it was investigating the incident at the Spanish plant run by Rovi, but did not find reasons to seek a temporary suspension of production after an initial assessment.

“COVID-19 vaccine production in Rovi is able to continue, following a preliminary risk assessment,” the European Medicines Agency told Reuters in a statement.

“An investigation into the root cause is ongoing. EMA will be able to provide more information as the investigation progresses,” it added.

Moderna has so far delivered to the EU nearly 75 million doses of its COVID-19 vaccine, EU public data show. The company has two contracts with the 27-nation bloc for up to 460 million shots.

Spanish pharma company Rovi, which bottles Moderna vaccines for markets outside of the United States, said the contamination could be due to a manufacturing issue on a production line. A spokesperson said the company could not say anything more while it was investigating.

Moderna put the lot in question and two adjacent ones on hold.

NHK, in a report published late on Thursday, cited health ministry sources as saying the contaminant was believed to be a particle that reacted to magnets and was therefore suspected to be a metal. Moderna has described it as “particulate matter” that did not pose a safety or efficacy issue.

A Japanese health ministry official said the composition of the contaminant has not been confirmed. In a statement, Takeda said it asked Moderna to investigate the issue and that it would work with the ministry to replace the affected supply.

News of the contaminant could prove a fresh setback for Japan’s inoculation drive as it struggles to persuade many - particularly young people - to get vaccinated.

4th straight week with over 200,000 people took to the streets of French cities to protest against a new "health pass" designed to prevent the spread of coronavirus.  Google News does not cover this story. 

The protesters waved French flags and held signs such as "No to the health pass" and "Liberty!" 

"We want none of this!" a 53-year-old female protester in Paris told French news agency AFP.  "It is a political crisis disguised as a health crisis."

The French Interior Ministry said nearly 215,000 people took part in the demonstrations nationwide, short of the 250,000 expected. In Paris alone, some 1,600 police officers were tasked with responding to three separate marches.

Why Everyone is Becoming an Activist

What is activism in this new politically biased fake news Coronavirus quarantine World? Why is it so important to express your 1st Amendment rights to free speech with your local Government? How can you make a difference by writing letters and engaging with local Facebook groups & local news media? 

There is not a person in this world who cannot admit that the Coronavirus data we have been consuming sucks. Public policy has now been established on this horrendous data and fear has parallelized most economies. You can also thank our fake news media that just regurgitated the propaganda without ever doing any research of due diligence.  

Most people think of activism as participating in a protest. However, I prefer is to be an activist by interpreting the news media and data. Information is power if properly communicated to the right individuals.  

The news media has lost all credibility with most intelligent people these days. However, it still has enormous power to influence behavior & Government decisions no matter how misinformed or misguided. I am not sure if I am angrier at the news media or Government officials for their emotional decision making and fear-based propaganda.  

Never in my lifetime have I seen this many people who are pissed off about National, State, County & Local Government policies surrounding Coronavirus. There are so many misguided Government policies to be disappointed in, that I don't even know where to start.  

I have said this from the very beginning of this crisis that our public officials are policy based on emotion and insanely inaccurate expert projections. There is one thing that has remained constant in this information crisis and that is the public data we are receiving is horrendous. There are so many expert data error examples that I don't even know where to start on this rant either. 

No one will admit that the projections health officials & medical tv experts were making in April and March were correct. Where are they now and why aren't we holding them accountable for their crap data? Most Government officials then proceeded to take these expert opinions and projections to feed the fear-mongering news media so they could scare everyone into staying home. 

The USA effectively shutdown the economy with Government policy that was based on false projections. Sweden was the only country that might have been skeptical and actually thought rationally about the outcome of this decision and just asked everyone to change their behavior without staying home. They are in the same position as the USA now but their economy is in way better shape. Short term pain and long term gain.  

Many local USA Government officials I have talked with said it was easy to shut down parks, beaches restaurants, and businesses with County health recommendations. However, the harder part is now convincing everyone to reopen.  

This pandemic or crisis of information started out with stay-at-home orders. We all followed the rules of washing our hands, wearing masks in grocery stores, and pretty much shut down everything in our lives. We all thought that 15 days of following orders to stay at home until Easter was reasonable and most people seemed to comply. The purpose of this was to flatten the curve or prolong the time for more people to get the virus. Aside from NY our hospitals had plenty of capacity and we accomplished this goal. 

Some would argue that staying at home was the only way to flatten the curve. However, some would argue that changes in behavior is what prevented the virus spread not staying home. Doing things like washing hands & social distancing is what flattened the curve. In my opinion, staying at home had little to do with flattening the curve because most of the Coronavirus cases were actually contracted in the home.

Here is an interesting cell phone data tracking study on how many people actually did follow the stay at home orders? The answer was 45-65% of the population actually stayed home. There was a large portion of the population who ignored the orders or were essential workers. The people who didn't stay home likely changed their behavior.  

So what happened on Easter, April 12 and why was the "goal post" get moved further out to April 30? Why did Trump give authority to the State Governors to establish stay at home orders? Why are the decisions to open up so political? Why did State & County health officials have so much power to make decisions?  Why wasn't more of this authority with local City Government officials?

There are so many questions of mismanagement that people like me are becoming activists and are asking practical questions of City and public officials that can't seem to answer. LA County is a great example of 11 million people that has 109 cities within the County. Each city experienced drastically different rates of infection, yet each city was subject to the same LA County draconian rules or recommendations.  

In cities where population density is greater the virus case rates are greater. It's just common sense that is being overlooked and not every city deserved that same rules.

Not letting each city manage and make their own public policy was a huge mistake. Just look at neighboring Orange County which has drastically different politics than LA County. OC is much more conservative and they kept their beaches open and have far fewer restrictions than very liberal LA County. Some Orange County Beach cities even had to file a lawsuit against the State of California to retain their rights.

My gut says if something like this pandemic ever happens again, each city or municipality needs to make its own decisions, what is best for themselves.  A one size fits all public policy is just plain ridiculous and stupid in large cities.  If you don't believe this assumption then you should just stop reading now because you don't understand economics anyway.

Local Government policy is what influences most of your life and why becoming an activist can really influence the policy of resisting change to keep a normal life. Influencing change at the County, State, or Federal Government level is nearly impossible unless you have major power, money, or influence. Most all of the local government policies are likely to affect you as a homeowner, renter, or small business owner.

The term that I keep hearing from the media and Government is "what is the new normal" going to look like? I really can't stand this term because it implies that we need to remake our entire economy or business practices. What happened to Free America, giving people and businesses choices about how to mitigate their own risks?  Has enough time passed to understand the virus and do we really have enough data to evaluate the risks of operating a normal society?  

What if I want to send my child to a normal school setting or have dinner in a sit-down restaurant? Shouldn't I have the choice of whether to take this risk or not?  Yes the virus is contagious but it's not that deadly if you look at the mortality rate of infection?  Walking across the street is probably more dangerous. 

Most people I speak with are not afraid of getting the virus and many people I know already have had the virus or now have the antibodies. Three people I know had the Coronavirus and also had flu shots. Just a coincidence or are you more susceptible to the virus if you had a flu shot?  Flu shots are an entirely different controversial discussion which you can read here. 

You have the choice to stay at home or send your child to an online school. No one is forcing you to do anything. Government officials have overreached their authority during this crisis and have no logical solutions on how and when to open up the economy or schools.   It is entirely possible that by August and September that we are even talking about the virus in the news because the spread is so rare.  Not a popular view but certainly possible with 3 months of warm weather. 

The only way officials seem to be responding is by legal threats similar to what Tesla's CEO Elon Musk did threatening to pull out of California. Unfortunately, most small businesses don't have the power and the influence that Elon Musk has and so they become easier targets of control without massive financial resources.

One brave city official in Manhattan Beach Suzanne Hadley suggested the following: 

"If I owned a business I would seriously consider just reopening and rolling the dice. Biz owners need to weigh their risk tolerance of legal action against them--as well as the costs of angering some customers and endearing themselves to others. Tough call. As an elected official I would stand with anyone who chose to reopen."

Class action lawsuits are probably going to be the only solution unfortunately for many things to open up and return to normal. City & public officials are way too risk-averse and seem to be taking a wait and see attitude in California instead of a leadership position. 

Public shaming on social media like Facebook seems to be another solution to get lawmakers to take action on certain issues. City council meetings are virtual now on Zoom or GoToMeeting so its harder for people to discuss public issues in person. However, more people are actually listening to these public meetings now and it is easy to share a video or sound clip after a meeting to spread the word on an issue. 

Public schools are going to be a hot topic of activism in the coming months as we get closer to fall. Making sure your school board is looking at all data sources and are not politically motivated in their decision making is going to be incredibly important. I have seen way too much confirmation bias when making decisions about data and we need to make sure there is a healthy PUBLIC discussion or debate on these issues. 

Get active on social media, write letters and don't be afraid to speak your opinion.  We are all in this together!
